Higher Education Coalition

Colleges and universities engaging college students in evidence-based P-12 student support roles as tutors, mentors, success coaches, post-secondary transition coaches, and wraparound support coordinators in their local communities.

The Higher Education Coalition is a group of institutions working to expand their efforts to recruit, train, and place more college students in P-12 high impact student support roles. This is being done through various pathways to service, including Federal Work-Study community service jobs or other paid positions, community-engaged learning or service learning courses, fieldwork, internships, career-connected learning opportunities, and more.

Connect with Us

The Partnership supports coalition members by:

  • Facilitating collaboration between campus-based programs, offices, and departments working to recruit, train, and supervise college students in P-12 student support roles.
  • Supporting colleges and universities to expand off-campus partnerships with school districts and youth-serving nonprofits.
  • Hosting events to uplift promising practices, address implementation challenges, share timely resources, and facilitate collaboration across the coalition (annual summit, monthly working group meetings, quarterly learning community calls, webinars, and more).
  • Creating implementation guidance and toolkits focused on strategies for success.
  • Providing one-to-one technical assistance to higher education leaders and practitioners, and their partners, to identify support needs and explore solutions.

Join Our Community

All colleges and universities are invited to join the Higher Education Coalition at no cost. Membership is voluntary and participation in coalition activities is based on individual capacity. We look forward to collaborating with you, and your campus and community partners!

Free Mentoring Training Modules

These modules are designed to support college students serving as mentors for K-12 students, and to support supervisors of college mentors in implementing effective mentoring and ensuring that mentors gain career-connected experiences while providing crucial support to youth.

Leveraging Partnerships between Higher Education & P-12 Systems to Support Students Through Federal Work-Study Roles

The PSS Higher Education Coalition provides multiple mechanisms of support to IHEs and communities striving towards meeting this goal. This guide outlines initial steps and considerations for IHEs moving from commitment to action, from joining the PSS Higher Education Coalition to placing college students in PSS-aligned community service roles in P-12 schools and out-of-school time programs.

High-Impact Tutoring: Out-of-School Time Playbook

The Playbook aims to support OST providers and networks that support OST providers (e.g., afterschool networks, national affiliates, state service commissions) that are interested in expanding or beginning to offer high-impact tutoring programs. While OST staff members are the primary audience, state education officials, school district staff, and school administrators can leverage many of the resources in this Playbook.
